REGISTRATION
Registration of MINDER is expected if you wish to continue using MINDER past
the trial period. The unregistered demo mode of MINDER allows only up to ten
reminders to be used at one time. The registered versions allows the full
capacity of five hundred total reminders at one time.
Registration for this program is $24.95 U.S. funds. This can be sent by money
order, check (drawn on a U.S. bank). Do NOT send cash. Once I receive your
payment, you can obtain your registration key code one of two ways: Either by
calling my support board (Uncle D's BBS) or by regular mail. The fastest
way to get your registration is to call my support board. If you are planning
on getting your key code on the board, call before you fill out the order form.
You need to write on the order form what name you used to call Uncle D's
support BBS. Use your real name if possible. Write that information down in
the appropriate section of the order form.
When I receive your payment, I'll immediately send you a private message with
your registration key code, and all the information required to register this
door. The telephone number of the support BBS is (415) 364-3001. This BBS is
located in Redwood City, CA. The Sysop is Dave Spensley.
By registering this program, you will receive free technical support by
leaving a message to me on Uncle D's BBS, or internet e-mail. You will also be
entitled to free software updates, or bug fixes (if and when these occur).
These updated versions (if any) can be obtained on Uncle D's BBS in the
Author's conference. This can be joined by logging onto Uncle D's BBS and
typing AUTHOR at the main prompt. You will not be notified by me of software
updates. You must call Uncle D's periodically in order to receive these files.
INTRODUCTION
Welcome To Minder
You will never forget to do another task again. Minder is a full function
daily task manager with all of the options found on the more expensive date
book programs...but with a user interface designed for the rest of us. With
Minder you can schedule any task or reminder at any time. Each time you run
Minder it will show you what you have scheduled for today in an easy to read
tabular form. If you have something planned for tomorrow you will have the
option to view those tasks as well.
When you wish to enter a reminder you will be asked for the date the task is to
be completed as well as a description of the task. The reminders also have a
small box next to them that you can "check" to signal to you and to Minder that
you have completed the task. Minder will inform you of any tasks that are
"past due" and have not been marked as completed by you or "checked."
Reminders can also be set up to be "permanent." This means that if you have
something that occurs yearly, such as someone's birthday or a wedding
anniversary, you can make it permanent. Permanent reminders are not deleted by
Minder, and when a new calendar year starts, Minder will change all permanent
reminders from last year to this year.
Old "completed" or "finished" reminders are deleted from the reminder data file
after they are two months old. They are not gone forever though. All deleted
reminders are stored in a separate file that can be viewed by running the
included program PASTDUE.
The reminders scheduled for today as well as tomorrow can be printed to paper
quickly and easily.
This manual is separated into two sections:
INTRODUCTION
PROGRAM OPERATION
-Adding Reminders
-Deleting Reminders
-List Reminders
-Mark Reminders
-Print Daily Reminders
-Edit Reminders
Read through these sections completely before running Minder to help familiarize
yourself with its operation.
PROGRAM OPERATION
- ADDING REMINDERS
It's very easy to add reminders with Minder. When Minder is started you will
be presented with a list of choices at the bottom of the screen. Among these
is: (A) Add Reminders. To access this function as well as any others listed
just type the letter in front of the description. In the case of adding
reminders, just type the letter "A" and press the ENTER key. This will bring
up the Add Reminders section of the program.
The first thing Minder asks you is the Month that the reminder is scheduled
for. If you need to be reminded about a friend's birthday on November 10th,
1996 you would do the following: Minder will first ask you to enter the month
of the reminder. In this example it would be 11. If you just press the ENTER
key without entering a number Minder will use the current month by default.
Next you are asked to enter the day of the event. In this example you would
enter 10 and press the ENTER key. Next you are asked for the Year. Again,
Minder will automatically use the current year if you just press the ENTER
key. The next question will ask you to enter the description of the
reminder. You have up to 50 letters that can be used for the description.
In the above example you would type in "Anyone's Birthday is today. Be sure to
get a present." And then press the ENTER key. The final question asks you if
you wish to make this a permanent reminder. A permanent reminder is something
that happens year after year. In this case, "Anyone's" birthday happens every
year, so you would choose permanent. Minder will never delete permanent
reminders unless you delete them yourself. All permanent reminders will be
"renewed" when a new calendar year occurs.
When you are through entering reminders, type 0 and press ENTER at the prompt
that asks you the month for the reminder.
- DELETING REMINDERS
Deleting reminders is a quick and painless process. If you have some reminders
that you may have entered incorrectly, or no longer have any need for you can
quickly and easily remove them from your data file. Remember, Minder
automatically deletes reminders that have been "marked" by you, signalling
their completion, and that are older than two months. If you are at the main
menu look at the bottom of the screen. You will see choice D as: (D) Delete
reminders. To go into this section, type the letter "D" and press the ENTER
key.
You will now see the delete reminders section appear. It asks you to enter the
number of the Month containing the reminder you wish to delete. So if you want
to delete a reminder of November, 1996, you would type 11 and press ENTER. As
in the "add reminders" section, if you want to delete a reminder from the
current month, Minder will automatically use the current month if you just
press ENTER. You will then be asked for the Year. If you just press ENTER,
it will use the current year. If the year you want is a different year just
enter that value.
Minder will then list all reminders in the month and year you specified. Once
listed, you will have the option to enter the number of the reminder to delete.
Enter that number and press the ENTER key. Minder will then confirm that you
want to delete that reminder. There will be a short pause as Minder deletes the
reminder from the data file and re-sorts the other reminders. Remember, by
deleting reminders using this method, rather then letting Minder delete them
automatically after two months, you will lose them forever. When you are
finished deleting reminders, you can return to the main menu by typing 0 and
pressing the ENTER key at the "Enter the month" prompt.
- LIST REMINDERS
To list all of the reminders for a particular month and year, choose module
"L" listed on the main menu. It's listed as: (L) List reminders. To go into
this section, type the letter "L" and press the ENTER key. You will then be
placed in the List Reminders section.
Minder will ask you for the month and year to list. Enter those values, or if
you want the current month and year just press the ENTER key twice and Minder
will automatically use those values. The screen will then fill up with the
reminders entered for the month and year you chose. To return to the main
menu, type 0 and press ENTER at first prompt. If you would like to view ALL
the reminders that you have entered type the letter "A" at the "Enter the
month #" prompt and press ENTER.
- MARK REMINDERS
To signal to Minder that you have been reminded of an upcoming event and that
you have completed it, you need to "mark" it. You can see if a reminder has
been marked by looking at the small box to the right of the number of the
reminder. If this box is empty and looks like [ ] then you haven't "marked"
that reminder. If you see a check mark in that box, then you have already
"marked" it. There are two ways to "mark" a reminder. One way is at the main
menu prompt. The prompt reads : "Enter number to mark, or type Letter of
action and press ENTER:". This means that if one of the numbers listed above
for the present day has been completed, you can simply type that number in and
press ENTER. It will immediately put a check mark in the box. If you wish to
"un-mark" a reminder just enter it's number and press ENTER. The check mark
will then disappear. The second way to mark reminders is to list all the
reminders in a particular month and choose which ones to mark. You can do
this by choosing menu choice (M) Mark reminders. Type the letter "M" at the
main menu prompt and press ENTER. You will then be placed into the Mark
Reminders function.
You are asked for the Month and Year to list. Enter those values, or press
ENTER twice to use the current month and year. The reminders for the month and
year you chose will then be listed. If you see the reminder number you wish to
"mark", or "un-mark" if it's already marked, enter that number and press ENTER.
Minder will then place a check mark in the box next to the reminder, or will
remove that check mark if you are "un-marking" that reminder. To return to
the main menu, type the number 0 and press ENTER at the first prompt.
- PRINT DAILY REMINDERS
The Print Daily Reminders function allows you to print today's reminders as
well as tomorrow's reminders (if you have any scheduled for tomorrow). You
must have a printer hooked up to your computer and turned on to use this
function. To select this function, type the letter "P" at the main menu and
press ENTER.
Minder will then start printing both today's and tomorrow's reminders in an
easy to read form similar to the way the screen displays them.
- EDIT REMINDERS
With the "edit reminders" function you can quickly and easily change any part
of a reminder such as: Day, Month, Year, Message, whether it has been "done"
(i.e marked), and if it's a permanent reminder. To select this function, type
the letter "E" at the main menu prompt and press the ENTER key.
You will then be asked for the Month and Year containing the reminder(s) you
wish to edit. Enter those values, or press ENTER twice to use the current
month and year. Minder will then list all of the reminders for the month and
year you entered. If you see the reminder you wish to edit, type its number
at the prompt and press ENTER.
All of the attributes of that reminder will be listed and numbered. Choose
the number of the attribute you wish to change and press ENTER. When you are
finished editing, follow the directions given in the prompt to return to the
main menu.
** UNFINISHED REMINDERS
This choice may or may not appear on the main menu screen. This option will be
listed as (U) Unfinished Reminders. It will also be in red for those that are
using color monitors. If you wish to see these "unfinished" (ie. Un-marked)
reminders type the letter "U"and press ENTER. Minder will show you each
unfinished reminder. If you completed that task or reminder type Y and press
ENTER..if not type N and press ENTER.
** TOMORROW'S REMINDERS
You may or may not see this option listed on the main menu. This option will
appear if you have reminders scheduled for tomorrow. If you do, and you wish
to see them, simple type in the letter "T" and press the ENTER key. Minder
will then list them on the screen.
** EXTERNAL PROGRAM CALLED -PASTDUE-
There is an external program written for use with Minder called PASTDUE. This
program is included on the installation/program disk and will be copied to
your Minder directory during installation. This program will list all of the
reminders that Minder has deleted after the two month time period mentioned
in the Deleting Reminders section previously. To run this program just type
PASTDUE and press ENTER at the DOS prompt.
** TECHNICAL NOTES
The data structure and file structure is set up so that can have up to 500
reminders accessible at one time. If you are using the unregistered version
of Minder, you will only be able to store 10 reminders. This restriction will
be lifted when you register the program and enter your registration key.
